This valley, of glacial origin, is carved by the River Lys, which was once know as Ellex.
Gressoney Saint Jean (1385m) was already of touristic importance at the start of the 1900s, with the Queen Margaret of Savoy having her castle built here (Castello Savoia) in 1894. It is famous for its maintaining of antique traditions, costume and dialect; it is characterised by its beautiful historical town centre which follows the architectural traditions of the Walser villages; and is appreciated also for its walks in the summer and cross country skiing in the winter.
The 15th century church, the Villa Margerita, the Alpenfaunamuseum with its collection of trophies and arms, and the lake Gover, all stimulate the visitor.
Gressoney la Trinite (1644m) is the highest village of the Valle del Lys.
At the foot of the MonteRosa is a renowned Alpine resort for both winter sports and for group excursions on the Monte Rosa glacier.
Everywhere you can meet people who speak the original language and admire the typical Walser buildings (Walsers are the name of the original settlers), stadels, stone and wooden constructions, propped up on mushroom-shaped pillars.
The village, laid-out on slopes, look towards the church with its typical bell tower and are a testimony to the history of this little great Alpine village.
